So, I've spent most of tonight trying to configure PCSX2, a PS2 emulator that seems to be very good. Firstly, does anybody have any advice about getting it running optimally? I'm suffering quite a bit of lag on my laptop, when anything moves in the game the FPS can drop dramatically, its not an ideal gaming platform.
Has anybody used PS2 emulators extensively? Whats the compatibility like?
I'm interested in play quite a few RPGs I bought a while back, but obviously now I have to either try and repair my machine, buy one or get PCSX2 working well.

PCSX2 generally sits around 70% of some 2000 tested games are playable. http://pcsx2.net/compat.php - I'd check the games you want to play here to be honest.
I've only briefly toyed with PCSX2 as far as PS2 emulation goes, but it pretty much seems to be the only one worth even a brief look. I suspect it and Dolphin may be as next-gen as emulation gets... hard to see how any of the most recent consoles could be emulated to any degree of playability.

I've seen videos of PCSX2 online and the results are pretty impressive, especially things like hi-res Persona 4 gameplay...

Just sorting out a way to use a control pad on it too. Also ordered a replacement laser for my ps2.

I'd still prefer to play it all on my PS2 though, cant beat playing it on the tv.

Opened the PS2 up and noticed the bloody torx driver on the laser unit so I couldn't remove it. Realised all of the dirt and dust in the unit so I got the trusty alcohol out and gently cleaned the lens of the unit. The PS2 must have come from a smoking home because the horrible brown that came off when I cleaned it.
It was very successful and Stella Deus loaded up first time \o/

Went and tried out another slightly older, but seemingly more demanding game than Persona 3 FES - Devil May Cry 3. Seemed to run fairly well with only a couple of audio blips, although I got a massive headache from the Interlacing until I read about how to set it to different modes. I could probably do with reading up more about how to set the upscaling properly, as well, it still seems to look slightly rank in some cases, albeit a massive improvement from the PS2's output.

I didn't get too far into P4 when testing it because the intro takes about 85 hours to finish but I saw the cutscenes, did some battles and moved around places. But yeah, it's amazing how much polish has been applied to the visuals... Now all I need is a decent USB controller.

60% of the time, it works every time. (The other 40% requires the use of the D-Pad)
You might want to look into overclocking, mind - quick bit of research says that depending on the product and risk involved, those chips can reach up to 4.0GHz. Not that you'd need that, of course, a bump to about 3.2 would be great for PCSX2.

Basically, you MUST have the disc image rather than the DVD. In the Emulation settings window you can enable speedhacks. I'd definitely recommended trying quite a few. They all have a recommendation by the side of the settings and this is where you'll find the best performance boosts, for sure.
I have been playing Okami on 1920 x 1080 res and its amazing. I put some screenies in the Okami impression thread if anyone hasn't looked. As for upscaling, Siri, you basically just change the resolution in the Video plugin settings. Muck about with the PS2 internal resolution. Dont know if I mentioned on this site about the new sound plugin too, its included in the SVN releases and its version 2.0.0. It supposedly clears up a lot of sound glitching, I've had nothing go wrong with Okami.
Finally, just to reiterate, I cant recommend the speedhacks enough. I have a very good PC so the basic settings are all I need but you can look at more ambitious ones the slower your computer is.

Meanwhile, the DEFCON 1 button has been activated on AMD Overdrive (Auto Clock). It's currently up to 3.4Ghz at a steady 33c, Although beyond that lies the Twiglet Zone.
EDIT: And the quarterback is toast! Froze up at 3.44Ghz, so scaled it back to a healthy 3.4Ghz. Still at a solid 33c, but the proof is in the pudding.

edit : I'm really really struggling not to rip some more games I have. I'd love to see Persona, DQ8 and Viewtiful Joe in 1080 res but I must finish Okami first.

I must say, I dont think I've seen a game look as good as Okami does at 1920x1080 res this generation.
