Just need to get this off my chest, really, and social media's a no-go since some fucker shopped me for having a bit of a moan about work a year ago. Even though my FB account is locked down tight and I'm very selective about who's on my friends list - presumably, somebody found me by logging into somebody else's account. Wasn't exactly good for the paranoia, whatever the case.
Looks like I'm losing my job, finally. It's been on the cards for quite literally *years* - I remember talking about it here, back when the place was still populated by more than three users. Things have dragged on and on and I've always managed to make myself useful enough to be necessary to the business. That's still the case, but now we're owned by a different company and some of the people in charge seem to be making decisions based more on instinct than actual analysis, so the admin/data infrastructure is getting pulled apart (we already lost our entire sales team recently, when they all refused to apply for any of the new, lesser roles that were offered to them).
I've known it's been coming for a long, long time, so it's not exactly a surprise. It's initial meetings about proposed changes to the team tomorrow and I'm not really hopeful. My role is - and always has been - pretty badly defined, in that I do a lot of the shit that other people don't want to or don't understand and I'm spread across a whole bunch of disparate, random tasks. An accurate job description would be... lengthy. It's this, I think, that's going to do for me, as I've always known it eventually would.
The likelihood is that I'll take a redundancy payment and go. The payment won't be significant and won't be anything like enough that I won't have to start applying for another job immediately, but it's enough that I wouldn't let them get away with not paying it. To an extent, I've been hanging on so that they have to fork it out, rather than going of my own accord earlier. As a colleague said, he's looking at it as payment for the years of uncertainty and worry.
My problem is that the random nature of my role is impossible to put into a CV or job application. How do you let people know that you've basically been an Elastoplast over a load of the holes in the business and can turn your hand to pretty much everything that's thrown at you without coming across as an arrogant prick? And, more to the point, how the hell do you know what sort of job you want to look for when all you've done for a massive chunk of your working life has been this kind of odd-job trouble-shooting?
Worrying and stressful. I'm struggling to see me ending up doing anything other than working back in a supermarket, which I *really* don't want to do again. Seven years of that bullshit is enough.

Sorry to hear about that Randy. The best advice I can think of is being honest on your CV and trying to list a constructive list of task and talk about the ones you felt you are best at.
Do you have any big employers local to you? by this I mean Universities, Hospitals as it might be worth having a look there and tailoring your CV to anything that looks relevant.
An agency is a good option if you get stuck, but in my experience some put you forward for any old thing that might vaguely match your CV.
I've been made redundant three times and I left the last job when they started going through organisational change as I couldn't bear going through the process again, so I really do feel for the situation you are in at the moment as I know how hard it can be.

Good for you, management like this tend to only care about the balance sheets and not the work or the workers. I'd have a backup plan, agency or whatever, but just basically be a passive pain int the arse, use your rights to looks for other work on their time and remember only gross misconduct can get you fired at this point

Looks like they're also making my line manager redundant, which is the stupidest move they've pulled. Without him, the organisation is guaranteed to fail, and soon, because he's the only person there who has a proper understanding of the funding, the contracts, etc. He's also a genuinely lovely bloke. Tbh, even if my own job hadn't been going, I'd have been looking for a new one on hearing that he's on his way out anyway. Remaining staff in the department - the two whose jobs are currently safe - are arguably more upset than those of us who are probably going to be heading into the sunset, as a result. Income aside, there's literally no point in staying there now.

West Midlands, Shend, right on the border with Wales. I can't drive, so I'm a bit limited geographically. Arguably another way in which I've kind of done myself over.
I don't think they're winding up on purpose, but I think it's almost inevitable now that it will be shut down and absorbed into the larger organisation, rather than being left as its own business unit as was orginally claimed to be the plan. To be fair, I believe that the original intention *was* that it would stay its own business unit, but there's been a fairly rapid erosion of the staff base since the transfer of ownership that's led to that being impossible to maintain. Various reasons, all of which I think would be worth going into and interesting to read - it's almost a case study in how to *not* manage the transfer of a business - but the paranoia about discussing it online is still there.
If the proposed redundancies happen - and I don't doubt they will, although I know from the last round that they *do* amend their plans based on feedback, albeit not effectively enough to prevent affected staff from deciding that it's better to take the redundancy payment than apply for the new roles - I give the place another six months before more serious discussions are had about its overall future, with a likely shutdown in a year, maybe eighteen months.
Which is also worrying, because, as I might already have said, my partner works in the same place. We've already gone through this nonsense with her job twice in the last thirteen months. It's exhausting.

Holy shit Randy, that's awful! I feel your pain too - I'm in a very similar situation, albeit not quite as bleak. IT job that I've been in for a very long time, jack of all trades but master of none elastoplast odd job guy doing all the tedious crap that no-one else wants to do. And the company was sold just before Christmas - they told us on the morning of the Christmas lunch. Thankfully so far the takeover seems to be benevolent, although no major actions so far; they're taking their time talking to everyone and getting the lie of the land. The mood is positive that it's going to be a good thing and they'll sort out a lot of internal processes and politics that badly need fixing, but we'll see.
I'm worried for exactly the same reasons as you. I was nearly kicked out in the middle of last year during "belt tightening", and have exactly the same problem of no idea wtf I want to do or can realistically apply for, as of course everyone wants a specialist, not a generalist. The main thing that kept me here was that I've been here for so long and know more than anyone else about the old suite of products... which are rapidly being phased out.
Had a chat with my sister (who has been a recruiter) about it recently and she suggested signing up for the daily job alerts email on the Guardian's jobsite, mainly because apparently they get some interesting companies advertising on there with the occasional oddball position that might be suitable.
She also suggested perhaps trying to find a charity to work for, as whilst they might not be the most lucrative jobs they often make up for it with working environment and caring about their employees. And there are plenty of them about all over the country. Have a look on https://www.charityjob.co.uk . It's mostly specialist care workers, fundraisers etc, but they do need IT people too.

Thanks Toad The idea of working for a charity is definitely appealing. I originally got into working for a local authority because I thought it'd allow me to feel that I was doing something more rewarding with my time than what I'd done up until that point in the private sector, but that turned pretty sour pretty quickly.
We've had our initial couple of meetings now. Last week, we requested a group meeting rather than the weird mixture of one-to-ones and joint things that they were going to push us into, because we wanted to make sure that the two people within the team whose jobs aren't going would get the chance to voice their concerns over how this will affect their workloads as well as how it'll effectively fuck the business over. It sounds more honest and less like sour grapes if it comes from those who are staying.
Made not a shred of difference. We had the response email this morning and they're ploughing ahead regardless. I think what really pisses me off about that is that it was proper hearts-on-the-table time in the meeting last week, with even those who are normally timid and nervous standing up to be counted. I like a good fight - well, I don't like them, really, it's just that I'm quite good at them when they happen - and it was less of a big thing for me to voice my opinions, but it'll have been a real leap of courage for certain people in the team to make their voices heard. I'm pissed off that they've been given the very clear message that management don't give a rat's arse about it.
They don't even seem to care about the fact that getting rid of the member of the team who's in a remote base will open up the door to all kinds of potential safeguarding issues. They're that goddamned focused on getting rid of staff above all else.
Got my first one-to-one tomorrow. I really can't be arsed with it myself - I just want to go - but I'm going to force them to adhere to the process for the full amount of time that they have to. In some important ways, I don't want to leave - I'm legit terrified by the thought of jobsearch and applying for stuff again after being knocked back so many times in the past (I've never actually got a job as a direct result of applying for it) and I don't want to land in the shit the couple of people in the team who are staying, but there's absolutely nothing appealing about the proposed merged job (which is, in reality, *three* into one, not two). Not only would it be completely unworkable, there's also the concern that if I stay there and the place does end up crashing and burning, that's both me and my partner facing redundancy at exactly the same time as each other. Which we absolutely can't afford.
