Well. There it is. The rumoured SNES mini. Within an hour of pre-orders going up they were sold out and now the best you can do is register interest.

I managed to get a pre-order in with our Teodi's place (he works at Game) Just before the £10 deposit jumped to £50.

Will be retailing at £79.99 on 29th September.

Some lessons from NES mini include a longer lead for the pads (5 ft rather than 3 inch, fnar) and they'll be producing more to meet demand.

21 games:

Contra III: The Alien Wars

Donkey Kong Country

EarthBound

Final Fantasy III (IV in Japan)

F-Zero

Kirby Super Star

Kirby's Dream Course

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Mega Man X

Secret of Mana

Star Fox

Star Fox 2

Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting

Super Castlevania IV

Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts

Super Mario Kart

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Super Mario World

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

Super Metroid

Super Punch Out

The Japanese box looks fantastic, as you'd expect for a replica of the original Super Famicom box. Also includes Panel de Pon! I guess the name Tetris Attack meant it wouldn't fly in the West.

I managed to preorder one from Amazon when it was first announced. I missed out on the NES but the SNES has far more gaming memories for me.

It will be interesting to see how the final version of Starfox 2 will compare to the ROMs floating around on the net.

I wonder what is under the hood and whether you will be able to upload your own games via hooky methods like the NES Classic, as Hebereke's Popoitto and Popoon are favourites in our house.

Got mine on Friday. Its a really nice size, not had a chance to really play around with it much though since Cuphead was released on the same day. And I've barely stopped playing that and Splatoon 2.

I think I ended up more interested in that mini C64 that got announced Friday. Might be because I need a replacement for my old Competition Pro USB stick from ten years ago that broke.

I skipped the NES Mini but I told myself that if a SNES Mini was announced I would at least try and see if I could get hold of one - I grew up in a "one console platform per generation" household (until I could buy my own of course) and we went down the Mega Drive route, but ports and emulation revealed how many classics were also in the SNES library. So despite many of these Mini purchases being nostalgia buys... for all intents and purposes, this is my first SNES  :wubs: Anyway, I didn't do the OTT thing of pre-ordering in 20 different places, hoping that one would come through. Instead I had the mentality of "I'd rather attempt to pre-order from somewhere (and potentially come away empty handed when they overestimate their stock allocation), than not attempt at all." So I got one from the website of Smyths toy store (yeah, I know) and it arrived on Thursday afternoon.

The main glaring omission when you open the box is the lack of an AC adaptor -  officially, you have to order an adaptor from the Nintendo Store or something... unofficially, a generic adaptor that you can plug a USB into will be fine (check the output voltage of course.) I think I'm using a Vita adaptor or something at the moment and I've had no issues, but it's still a curious decision. The console itself is great - setup is easy, the menus are fun, the controllers are fantastic (and you get 2!) and the game selection suits me fine. I know a lot of people have already busted theirs open and installed custom stuff and other games, but I don't know if I'll bother. I can always use a PC or CFW PSP with TV out for that, but I picked up the SNES Mini because it's a nicer overall package than the cable and romset fiddling that I'd otherwise do.

You can mess with ratios and filters or have clean unstretched pixels, you can suspend your game and even "rewind" gameplay if you messed up a certain sequence, and the games are the games. I've heard reports of weird technical quirks with things like "Touch Fuzzy Get Dizzy" in Yoshi's Island, but I haven't discovered stuff like that just yet...
