There are lots of things to come out of gamescom about GT5.
I, however, am fixated on this. ![]() No, but really: * Course Maker: Generate your own tracks. Choose one of the game's existing settings, then section by section build the track by specifying number of corners, difficulty, terrain, topography, banking, elevation, etc etc. Up to 10km tracks can be put together, either circuit or point to point. It's not an exact 1:1 3D course modeller, but works more like a deeper version of RECS from Lotus 3. * Day/Night transitions: Sun comes up, sun goes down. Specify whether you want real time transitions, or sped up. Conditions in the sky affect conditions on the ground, particularly circuit and air temperature which will affect car performance. * Dynamic weather: All kinds of weather modelled, and affects car handling and the track thusly. The best thing? Circuit conditions change over time - if it's been raining heavily and the sun comes out, within a few laps the worst of the moisture will have drained off the track and give you drier lines and better handling - providing you've put the right tyres on. The possibilities for pitstops! Oh my God! * This fucking amazing song: * GO-KARTS! ![]() Shoot me in the ass with a tranq and wake me up in November. Forza 3 was a beautiful bastard, but compared to this... it's a boat, and GT5 is a motherfucking torpedo.

So Alpha Protocol is an RPG about spies that I was looking forward to for a long time, partly because nothing like this has ever been done before (to my knowledge) and partly because I love the idea of the setting. You take the role of Michael Thorton, a newly recruited field agent of Alpha Protocol, a clandestine agency that performs operations which have no trace to the American government. At first it appears your mission is to track down some missiles made by some Yank company stolen by some stereotypical muslim, but naturally things are never that simple - shit soon gets out of hand and you find yourself in the middle of a MASSIVE CONSPIRACY that sees you travelling all over the world and having sex with a handful of really fucking stupid women.
AP goes along the lines of this nuRPG idea - real time shooty combat and standard third person gameplay mechanics mixed with stats, abilities and character customisation. The other big selling point of AP which I've not seen done as well as this in a game before is the approach to conversations. Everytime you talk to another character, you'll get your standard conversation tree, but critically in this, every conversation you have comes back to you later on. Your approach to interrogating and questioning characters can lead to very different conversations with other key characters later on, including what support you end up recieving, what intel you'll get for missions, what evidence you can collect and so on. It's really well polished, even if the script is daft and vapid at times. ... and that concludes the things AP does well. The gameplay itself is really awkward. I would say it comes down to three things - combat, stealth and data mining. The data mining is the least offensive and comes in a series of minigames where you have to break passwords on computers (word search), pick locks on safes (oblivion) and turn off alarms (a sorta maze game. Sorta). You can try as many times as you like with the only penalty being an alarm will go off and send more troops - but they'll only spawn once, which is just as well because it gets so ballbreakingly hard to turn off alarms later on that you'll attempt it again and again just to get a handful of XP. The combat is horrid. Your heavy weaponary does fuck all damage and grenade AOE is so laughably small that it's almost pointless to go in with anything other than a pistol. One of the pistol abilities is chain shot, which slows down time and allows you to precision shot several targets. Ever wanted to shoot 6 bullets out of a gun at once? Good, buy this game. Regular enemies have two kinds of attack: Stay EXACTLY where they are or zergrush you. There's no counter tactics or intelligent cover AI going on here, but to their benefit anything other than a headshot is more or less ineffective. Bosses are a different story. They go the other way on difficulty to almost stupidly difficult level. Unbreakable attack strings and weapons that can take you out in 3-4 shots are not uncommon which leaves you with one fine option... chain shot them in the head, and they go down like a sack of shit. Stealth is likewise reliant on one ability - the one that allows you to be unseen for a short period of time. Activate it, run in, take out an enemy, swing the camera around so it's not facing him so that his body disappears, wait for the ability to recharge and do it again until the room is clear. Tedious. Er, Dave and Will played it as well. They can talk some now. |
